Benefits of Sound Therapy

Some of the most common benefits of sound therapy are:

  • Triggers the relaxation response

  • Can reduced blood pressure

  • Alleviates symptoms of chronic stress

  • Encourages better sleep

  • Releases and harmonizes the mind, body and spirit

What is Sound Healing and a Sound Bath?

Sound healing uses different vibrations to invite the body, mind, spirit and soul to come into harmony. Different emotions vibrate at different levels, and some believe that blocked, or unexpressed emotions, are the main source of dis-ease in the body.

“Sound is the medicine of the future.” -
— Edgar Cayce

The vibrations of emotions

Science has already proven that atoms are made of subatomic particles, which continually vibrate at certain frequencies. Objects aren’t the only things that vibrate. It has been proven that our thoughts and feelings produce energy, which trigger vibrations.   Emotions that we consider uncomfortable, or unpleasant, vibrate at relatively low levels. Emotions that most people find pleasant and joyful vibrate at higher levels.  The source of dis-ease  For most people, it is easy to express positive emotions like happiness and joy. However, many people don’t want to feel negative emotions, so they stuff them inside. If this is done over years, the lowly vibrating trapped emotions stagnate in the body and cause disease.

How does sound healing work, on the energetic level?

Our bodies are 60% water, which is a great conductor for vibrations. Sound healers use instruments, such as Tibetan bowls, crystal bowls, Quartzophone Crystal Harp, Koshi Chimes, gongs and even tuning forks, that vibrate at specific frequencies when struck.

The Quartzophone Crystal Harp

Rosemary is fortunate to have found the Crystal Harp or “Quartzophone” instrument which is 99.9% pure quartz crystal and was designed and created by Gaudry Normand of Mine Cristal in Cananda. This instrument has an enhanced, pure cristalline sound. Playing it creates a high range of harmonics, filling the space with beautiful overtones.

The crystal harp/lyre aka “Quartzophone” is the result of more than 12 years of research and development. The handcrafted crystal instrument consists of pure quartz crystal tubes (99.98% SiO2), which are mounted on a transparent acrylic base in such a way that the crystal tubes receive an optimal vibrating space. Quartz is a noble, natural material that has a very high vibration, therefore the crystal harp produces powerful, carrying tones that sound multidirectional and multi-dimensional. Silicon dioxide, which is piezoelectric by nature, emits tangible energy that touches us in our innermost being, relaxing us and at the same time energizing us.

I also use Koshi Chimes in my healing. The Koshi chime is an authentic musical instrument which is handmade near the Pyrenean mountains. Each chime is the result of meticulous craftsmanship.  Eight chords are welded with silver into the metal plate at the base of the resonance tube. Precise tuning creates a play of clear tones that is rich in overtones.

A few reviews from recent participants:

"Phenomenal teaching and healing program today with the Sound Healing. Your openness and heart-centered approach made for a very powerful session"

"Today was very powerful. I cannot believe how much better my head and neck feel.A profound, deeply relaxing, transformative experience, I will be back!"

I have experienced neuropathy in my feet for years, after my first sound healing, I experienced a respite from the pain and extreme sensitivity. For the first time in many years I could sleep with a blanket touching my feet!

There is nothing for you to do but rest, relax and receive... my body and mind loved it.

To sample the sound of the crystal harp you can listen to the podcast below where I was a a guest on Kacey Morabito Grean’s Shine on Radio and Podcast.

The science behind sound healing

As we all know sound is perceived through the ear. However, as more scientific evidence has emerged, researchers have found that sound is felt physically via vibrations in the body.  These vibrations can have a multitude of effects on a person.  There is now scientific evidence that Sound Healing helps calm the Vagus Nerve in our body.

There are 4 ways that Sound healing impacts the body:

  1. Sympathetic Resonance

  2. Brainwave Entrainment

  3. Frequency Follows Response

  4. Balance the Brain’s Left and Right Hemispheres

Sympathetic resonance

This is when the vibrations in one object produce vibrations in another. For example, if you have two tuning forks close to one another, if you strike one, it will cause the other tuning fork to vibrate at a similar frequency. This is the principle that causes the body to vibrate at the same frequency as the sounds produced by crystal bowls, gongs, tuning forks and other sound healing instruments.

2. Brainwave entrainment

Brainwave entrainment refers to the capacity of the brain to naturally synchronize its brainwave frequencies with the rhythm of external stimuli. In practical terms, this means that your brainwave frequencies synchronize with the frequencies produced by sound healing instruments. The positive frequencies allow your cells to operate in harmony with each other.

Frequency Following Response

Brainwaves are directly linked to mental states of consciousness. There are different types of brainwaves: delta, theta, alpha and beta waves.  Relatively slow delta waves are emitted during sleep, faster theta waves are emitted during meditation and beta waves (the fastest) are emitted when we are problem solving or focusing on particular tasks.

Sound waves that correspond to these four types of brain waves are generated when the sound healing practitioner strikes specific bowls. For example, the sound healer uses instruments that produce vibrations corresponding to the brain’s theta waves (4-8 hertz) to induce the positive feelings and healing experienced during meditation.

Balance the brain’s left and right hemispheres

The left and right sides of the brain are very different. The left side of the brain is associated with logic and problem solving. The right side of the brain is associated with creativity. In most people, the right or left side of the brain is dominant. Sound healing works on both sides of the brain to develop areas where we might be weak and improve communication between the hemispheres.
